Sub-system build at OSI Electronics UK - this multi-board assembly gives engineers the freedom to design products without unnecessary manufacturing constraints.

Sub-systems build

We provide sub-systems to major OEMs.

As we did through our former companies Briton EMS and Union Four Electronics, giving us over 35 years’ electronics manufacturing expertise in the UK.

From your drawings, we can manufacture complete complex (and not-so-complex) sub-systems in low or medium volumes.

We will take your electronics project right through the manufacturing process, including PCB assembly, and provide you with configured and tested sub-systems ready to install without the need for further testing.

We have dedicated areas for cable assemblies and sub-system assembly.  We do a significant amount of electro-mechanical work ranging from fitting a single PCB assembly (PCBA) into a simple housing to intricate sub-assembly builds with multiple PCBAs, cables, metal work and complex test procedures.

And if you want a fully enclosed area for your sub-assembly, we have a special air conditioned assembly and test room too.

Moisture sensitive devices are stored in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and baked and vacuum sealed or stored in one of our dry stores to maintain shelf life.

Whether a switch or tiny chip on a PCB, you want a reliable sub-assembly at a sensible price – and we need components which fit the manufacturing program.

As described on our Global procurement page, we have considerable experience in buying components and, if required, full batch traceability.

In buying components on your behalf, we’re helping your cash flow – as we also bulk buy, the savings are passed on to you through a more competitively priced sub-assembly.

We’re also happy to use your free issued parts and manage them through our system to reduce your stock holding, material commitment and your time managing materials.

PCBs

We have five PCB assembly lines (we don’t make the boards) for automated assembly of components to a board, whether conventional surface mount (SMT) or through the hole (PTH).  It is quite usual for large components to be added to a board by a skilled hand.

Ongoing investment in capital equipment and staff training ensures 100% placement accuracy and inspection of BGA, uBGA, QFN, POP, flip-chip and LGA devices as well as fine pitch QFP.

Every board is optically and visually inspected before it leaves the line to ensure it is defect-free.

We can also x-ray inspect boards – and you have the option of conformal coating, selective and vapour phase soldering and aqueous three-stage cleaning.

Do look at our PCB assembly page for more detailed information.

Our UK manufacturing has recently expanded (see the About page) giving us more room to tailor production to your specific requirements and make and test your sub-assemblies.

And when sales justify higher production levels and Far East manufacture becomes economic, your project can seamless transfer to group-owned manufacturing facilities in Indonesia and Malaysia – with integration of all your EMS requirements through one order managed by us on your behalf.

This is described in detail on the Global manufacturing page.

As a member of the OSI Group, we have special access to other member companies whose products can be incorporated into your project to maximise its value, help to reduce overall costs and ensure continuity of supply and quality.

Their products include opto parts, laser LEDs, displays, plastics, metalwork, key pads, cables and many other commodities, all manufactured to international standards.

Quality facts

We have accreditations for quality management (ISO 9001: 2008), medical devices (ISO 13485: 2003) and environmental management (ISO 14001).

Our PCB manufacturing process is certified IPC-A-610 Class 3, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies.  Class 3 is the highest class.

We are also an approved sub-contractor under the ATEX Directive and a certified sub-contractor for UL Approved Products.

And overseas, our facilities have AS 9100 certification for aerospace, defence and military work and ISO/TS 16949 for automotive applications.

Fully trained technicians

While PCB assembly is highly automated, as is much of the test work we do, assembling intricate electronics requires skilled and well trained technicians who can follow instructions and drawings to ensure every product is assembled correctly.

Training is on-going – with specific training given for each new project.
